Chinese rocket booster to crash somewhere this weekend

It’s not going to hit you (probably), but a Chinese Long March 5B rocket booster is going to crash somewhere on Earth this weekend. It could end up anywhere between the latitudes of Spain and New Zealand. Personally I’d bet on it ending up in the Pacific (it’s the biggest target).

The rocket was launched last month to carry part of a new space station to orbit. It’s not clear if the uncontrolled re-entry was an accident, or if China just chose not to bother with a responsible de-orbit.

Update (9 May 2021): The rocket landed in the Indian Ocean yesterday, very close to the Maldives.
